I messed up and I only cut the hole the size of 1/4 the sheet of paper. I
also made the mistake of leaving the hole and cutting the rest of the box
away. As a result the eggs lay chickens.
Very simple to make and cheap too.
drill a 1/2 hole in each corner before cutting to prevent over cutting or
tear-out. the radius is much stronger than a corner. good luck
your directions weren’t clear enough, i somehow got my penis caught in the
ceiling fan.
what do you mean your chickens didn’t like it? Who are they to have an
opinion on anything? Punch them in their stupid chicken faces and stuff
them in the boxes. If they don’t make eggs kill them and laugh.
Ok thanks, ill try that
Hay should never be used because the hens can contract aspergillosis from
the spores in the hay, especially when the hay gets moist. Aspergillosis
affects their lungs. Straw or shavings are a much safer choice for bedding.
I placed one in each of our three coops… given the option, at least our
chickens prefer the smaller standard nesting boxes mounted on the wall. Not
one bird has laid an egg in the tupperware box… nice idea though, maybe
other poultry owners will have different results. My wife gave me the “I
told you they wouldn’t use those” look… (“>
I remember watching your videos when i was younger. Now im starting to
watch them again and i love it
great idea if i need to make more nest boxes I’ll use this method i used
tidy cat litter boxes for the ones i have now
Looks good
Do you choke your chicken?
OMFG i love this idea! my brother in law was going to build me ones but
this one is perfect cus they arent so close to each other and easy to hose
off any poo and such. ALSO do u cut the feathers of ur hens for poop wont
get on the egg?? i seen others do that but not so sure its safe.
Very clever nest box! However, using hay instead of straw or shavings, can
cause aspergillosis caused by spores in the hay, especially if the hay gets
damp. Aspergillosis is a condition of the respiratory system and can cause
gasping for breath. It can be fatal in young chicks.
I did this and placed on in each of three coops… I also included decoy
wooden eggs to encourage the birds to lay. It’s been months, all of my
laying hens prefer the traditional nest boxes an not a single egg has been
produced inside the plastic tubs… was a nice idea though if it had only
worked…
You are correct Cindy, some breeds of hens do prefer to seek out dark,
small nesting boxes… when given the choice, most chicken breeds will not
use these large plastic bins. Offer several sizes and shapes, along with
the traditional nesting boxes and you’ll see quickly what they prefer…
Good idea Thanks for the explanation and information.
Say mermaid 7 times and post this on two other videos then touch water
Cindy, I’d say… construct several of different sizes and then see which
the hens prefer… best way to really know, is to offer options.
what an easy and LIGHTWEIGHT idea for nesting boxes! probably easy to clean
and maintain too those look like happy healthy chickens too! your
channel is great! i am always inspired after visiting it. i live in the
city now and can’t have chickens so no fresh eggs for me you make me
miss the simpler life. someday i hope to get back to it… someday
This is by far the best easiest box I have seen. Just fantastic. We used a
playhouse for them to sleep and lay in but this is much better.
how do you keep them from roasting on top
This is the best idea ever!
you don’t need 20 boxes for 20 chickens, so you’re saying 20 chickens will
use the same 3 boxes ?
Shouldn’t use hay, hay courses spores and bad for chickens use straw it’s
much better
I love this idea and am going to order some for all my chickens and ducks
but was wondering if it’d work equally as well for turkeys. Any idea?
Thanks!
No Problem. I see you are in Belgium, I hope you can get some of these,
they make life so much easier.
What breed are those white hens? and do they lay brown egg or white?
When I had turkeys with my chickens they would drink from the nipples and
so would my geese. Thanks for watching
Don’t leave a guy hanging, Tell me more. What is the coldest temp you have
used it in. Is your heater in a glass or metal tube? I am always looking
for better ideas. Thanks for watching.
They are Light Sussex and they lay brown eggs. Thanks for watching.
The first time I saw water system for chickens was from a company call
Avian Aqua Miser avianaquamiser (dot) com but the nipples were pricey. I
thought they sold a kit also. My work blocks their site so I don’t know if
this is still true. Then I found the nipples at QC Supply. HTH
Thanks for telling me mate.
How do you get the chickens to drink from them?
My suggestion is to make sure the plastic bucket is “Food grade”.
Go for it, you will never go back. Thanks for watching.
Holy crap 250w tank heater for 5 gallon? I use a 40w sand filled fish tank
heater for my goats 5 gallon bucket it hasn’t even got close to freezing
all the snow melts around the bucket. It was 14$ and it is meant to heat up
to a 15 gallon dish tank to I think 78′f from as low as 55′.
This looks great I cant wait to try it.
It is quite easy. Get one nipple to dip. Once one chicken sees the dip and
peaks at it the rest of the chickens will shortly follow. So once one is
peaking at the nipple then your good. I also do not put a bowl of water
with them, they seem to always go for the easy water that is why I only use
a water bowl when I give medication. Chicks are even easier, they peck at
everything. Thanks for watching.
That’s pretty cool. Thanks for the idea.
Is there a website to get this complete nipple bucket?
Not a bad idea, Great tip. Thanks
