Thanks, much appreciated. We are still learning all the time. One thing we both did before coming out here was to get our practical skills up to speed. I took a bricklaying course, ironic really because we bought a ruin of a stone and granite house – but the same rules apply and I learned so much about lime mortars. Sue had done a lot of tiling, though carrying terracotta tiles up and laying them onto a roof was challenging! If you want to see our house, it’s on the blog. All the Best, Andy

We’re in the process of making a chicken tractor from an old metal(4×8) frame table.

Yes I use sawdust or wood shavings under the roosts, it goes into the compost bin along with the contents of the dry toilet, all of which makes a fantastic feed for our fruit trees and raised beds.

Thanks! They liked the old house but it was really time to replace it. They certainly seem to feel comfortable in a wooden house and also perching on branches which I use for the perch/roost poles.
Thank-you! You might try blocking off the rafters and making a higher roost with a droppings pit underneath. Would make it safer for you!!! I suppose the rooster stays down on the roost is because he can’t fly up as well as the others, or maybe he just appreciates your carpentry!
Thanks! Yes, my father-in-law, who was a poultry farmer showed us how to makes these way back when we started with chickens. We also have them all at the same height otherwise you can get status and possibly bullying problems. I have to make some new ones with wider dimension branches for the new Cochin chicks – their feathery feet need the added width – planning a vid, as you say it’s a great way to keep everything clean. Do you put sawdust or straw under your roosts? It makes great compost!
